The new cok batteries at ArcerlorMittal's Brazil plant consist of a metal chamber lined with refractory materials inside which temperatures of more than 1,000 degrees Celsius are reached so that hard coal is distilled, volatile materials are removed and coke is converted into cok. The basic function of such a battery is to produce cok of high calorific value, which is the most suitable material for use as fuel in the iron ore smelting process in the blast furnaces of the iron and steel industry.
A fundamental part of the batteries is the so-called loader or charging cart, which moves along rails from the coal tower, where its compartments are loaded with the material for transfer to the loading mouths of each furnace. The carriage is used to move the coal and transfer it to the chamber where the coal will be distilled.
